Deerhounds

Lurcher Track 11.00am

Stewards - The Deerhound Club

This year there is the unique opportunity to witness this ancient breed demonstrating their speed and agility. They were originally bred for hunting deer in the Scottish Highlands and were highly prized. Owned only by the nobility and carefully bred to have an even temperament and stamina to pursue their quarry over differing terrains, especially heather covered hills! They are a quiet gentle breed yet having the strength to bring down a red stag.

The rifle eventually robbed them of their role and eventually the breed turned to hare coursing and they adapted well. As hare coursing is now banned the hound owners use a lure, although some dogs refuse to chase an artifiacial quarry.

They have changed little over the years and The Deerhound Club is very keen to keep them true to their roots.
