Lake Ring 2009

As ever our Lake Ring is used for fishing tuition, dog events and the infamous Punt Gun Demonstration which can be heard in every corner of the show when it fires.

Punt Gunning developed around coastal areas in the 19th century as a means of harvesting wildfowl for the commercial market. There is some belief that the originators were ex-gunners used to naval cannons and certainly there have always been ties between punt gunning and naval ports.

Fowl were skilfully stalked over distances, which involved lying prone in the punt using short paddles or poles to propel the punt to within range of the quarry, often through freezing water. The work was hard, cold, always wet and dangerous, and was considered one of the most difficult and demanding of all shooting activities.

The Gloucestershire Wildfowlers Association's Punt Gun static display overlooks the Court Lake. They will be giving demonstrations, with commentary, during the day.

Ian will help novices and those with more experience to brush up their skills free of charge. He has fished extensively throughout the UK where his experience includes chalk stream and rain-fed river fishing, still-water and reservoir trout, salmon, sea trout and salt-water fly fishing.

Coarse Fishing Tuition 11:00 - 16:30

Try your hand at some free coarse fishing tuition!
Ian Didcote will help you improve your skills no matter what level you currently fish at. Being a member of the Diawa Dorking Team and winner of many elite titles, Ian is probably the best person to talk to regarding this sport.

Coarse Fishing Demonstration 11:15, 13:30, 15:15

Learn more about coarse fishing with Ian, an established member of the Diawa Dorking Team, arguably the top team in the country at the moment, and host to many top and world class anglers. Ian has won many of the elite spring festival titles at White Acres, become the Thames Champion and also won many other match titles. He is very grateful to his sponsors Garbolino and Van Den Eynde who have supported him throughout.

Water Retriever Racing 12:00 - 13:00

Many years of argument between dog owners have attempted to decide the quickest breed of dog at retrieving game from water. Today we shall attempt to resolve matters with a series of tests of both swimming speed and retrieving ability. Court Lake provides a beautiful setting for everyone to watch the competition which will feature all the main breeds of retriever including Chesapeake Bay, Labrador, Golden and Flat Coats, with some Springer Spaniels thrown in for good measure.

There will be a chance for you to meet the competitors before they get wet between 11.00am and 12.00 noon in the Living Working Countryside area.
