Punt Gunning developed around coastal areas in the 19th century as a means of harvesting wildfowl for the commercial market. There is some belief that the originators were ex-gunners used to naval cannons and certainly there have always been ties between punt gunning and naval ports.
Fowl were skilfully stalked over distances, which involved lying prone in the punt using short paddles or poles to propel the punt to within range of the quarry, often through freezing water. The work was hard, cold, always wet and dangerous, and was considered one of the most difficult and demanding of all shooting activities.
The Gloucestershire Wildfowlers Association's Punt Gun static display overlooks the Court Lake. They will be giving demonstrations, with commentary, during the day.

Ian has fished extensively all over the UK where his experience includes chalk stream and rain-fed river fishing, still-water and reservoir trout, salmon, sea trout and salt-water fly fishing.
His demonstration attempts to cover all the principal casting techniques used in fly fishing, starting with very basic roll and overhead casts, extending the line with false casts, progressing to more advanced techniques like double hauling with single handed rod and Spey casting with a double handed rod.

Ian Didcote will help you improve your skills no matter what level you currently fish at. Being a member of the Diawa Dorking Team and winner of many elite titles, Ian is probably the best person to talk to regarding this sport.
The pursuit of Wildfowl is one of the oldest of country sports. In years gone by hardy men braved the elements on fenland, estuaries and coastal areas to scratch a living harvesting duck, geese and waders which they sent by train to the markets of London. By the end of the second world war professional wildfowlers were a dying breed, their places on our estuaries and foreshores were taken by sportsmen who felt the draw of these wild places and for whom the measure of a successful flight was not the number of birds shot. In many areas these men formed clubs and associations to protect their sport for future generations, the Gloucestershire Wildfowlers Association is one of the oldest of these and they manage over thirty miles of foreshore on the Severn Estuary in the interests of wildfowling and conservation.

Wet & Wild Gun Dogs- Retrieving for Dummies
A fun race in the lake between some of the more unusual breeds of gun dogs. All of those taking part are used for water work on driven shoots, duck ponds or wildfowling. Two dogs from each breed will race each other against the clock in a simulated set of water retrieves from the beautiful lake. After each team has run there will be a final flurry with the Frampton Duck Flush where one from each breed will race out into the lake to bring one of a large number of dummies thrown at the same time. We have not tried this before so who knows what will happen?!
This event will have the canine competitors lined up to meet you 15 minutes before the event (and afterwards, but you may get wet!)
