The Cotswold Cart Horse Society was originally formed in 1996, in order to promote the use of horses for work. The title was chosen for the society so that it incorporated all shapes and sizes of horses that have played a part in the workplace in the past, from the mighty Shire to the diminutive but mischievous Shetland.

The society is loosely centred in Gloucestershire, but with many members in the surrounding areas and further afield. The CCHS is able to offer a practical service to the members who own horses and provide a source of enjoyment and recreation to those who don’t and are simply interested in the working horse.

Our aim is to educate people with the basics of working horses and we run regular events, where our members can congregate to gain valuable hands-on experience. Due to the active core of members within our group, we are able to give demonstrations and pass on relevant knowledge of each other’s skills. We also offer social evenings with guest speakers that the members can enjoy. Our small society also boasts a good number of junior members that have their own training days and hold an annual competition.

Their Finest Hour

In May 1940 Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding told Prime Minister Winston Churchill "Should, God forbid, France fall, we will need every available aircraft and every trained pilot to defend the shores of Britain from the invasion force, which will most surely come".

As we all know there ensued the most desperately fought battle by a determined but outnumbered Royal Air Force, populated by British, Commonwealth and Polish pilots, which culminated in those historic words "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few".

Their Finest Hour has been put together specifically to commemorate the 70th Anniversay of The Battle of Briatin. Their events unit consists of a full size Mark 1 Hawker Hurricane, where you can have your photograph taken, along with a display of memorabilia hosted by gorgeous "WAAFS" and gallant young "pilots" in vintage uniforms. There will also be well researched information about Battle of Briatin action in the Frampton on Severn area.
