Main Ring Attractions 2007

Simulated Coursing - 10.00am
The National Lurcher and Racing Club

www.gonetoblazes.net/NLRC/Index.htm

The National Lurcher and Racing Club were formed in 1980 by a group of Lurcher enthusiasts from the West Midlands. The NL&RC has gone on to be the largest and arguably the most successful Lurcher Club in the world. Formed at a time when Lurchers had the reputation of being poachers' dogs and "untrained killers", the NL&RC takes great pride in the part that they have played in bringing Lurchers to be a recognised and respected member of the field sports fraternity.

Today Lurchers are used for pest control, mostly on rabbits. They are a purpose-bred crossbreed and are very biddable, making excellent pets and are quite happy to live alongside other animals in the family home provided that they have been properly trained. To learn more, please see members of the Club after the Simulated Coursing, at the Lurcher Show Ring or the Lurcher Racing.

Vintage Tractors - 11.00am

The parade of local vintage tractors and traction engines is a firm favourite with our visitors, many of which can remember these machines in use on farms in our area. Those of you wanting a close-up view can see the static display of the tractors and engines near the Farmers' Market throughout the day.

Harness Goat Society - 11.25am
www.harnessgoats.co.uk

The Harness Goat Society was formed in January 1987 with the aim of promoting good management to benefit the welfare of harness goats. Parades, show classes, occasional workshops and other social events are held throughout the year across the country. Harness goats were very popular in Victorian and Edwardian England giving rides at seaside resorts and were used to teach youngsters to handle, harness and drive before graduating to horse driving.

The parade today will be presented in period costume giving some insight into the usefulness of harness goats, both in the past and present day.

Frampton Family Riding Club - 11.50am
www.ffrc.org.uk

Appearing at over 60 shows a year, this unique show has captured the hearts and attention of many. New Zealanders Richard Savory and his presenter Stuart Barnes entertain and educate with their fantastic sheep all over the country.

As each breed is introduced we learn about its attributes and how the wool from the sheep's back becomes a jumper for us to wear. The highlight of the show is "The Sheep Show Hustle" - Dancing Sheep!

Teams fielded by the Berkeley, Beaufort, Cotswold Vale, Mendip Farmers, North Cotswold, North Hereford and North Ledbury Hunts form a relay over a "figure-of-eight" course, with two teams competing against each other on the same course, but in different directions, meeting and crossing paths at, over or near the central hedge. Each team consists of two mounted members and two members negotiating the obstacles with a wheelbarrow.

Our display by teams from the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, Countess of Mountbatten's Own Frontiersmen, 17th Lancers Display Team and Royal Logistic Corps simulates those days when cavalrymen surprised an enemy in its tented camp by lifting the pegs from their bivouacs on their lances at full gallop.

Prestbury Park Flyball Team - 3.00pm
Crufts Champions 2007
www.dicksondogtraining.co.uk

Sponsors: The Old Passage Inn
Flyball is a relay race for dogs, border collies traditionally being the most successful breed because of their speed, agility and intelligence. Two teams of dogs race against each other over four hurdles in succession before triggering the pedal on the flyball box. A tennis ball is then released which the dog must catch and hold before returning over the hurdles to the start line. The fastest team to get all four dogs and balls home are the winners.

Prestbury Park Flyball Team are the current Crufts Flyball Champions after successfully winning the tournament against 15 other teams. Despite three of their dogs retiring from competition this year, Prestbury Park have already qualified to defend their title at Crufts in 2008.
